The BAHA'I STORY
The BAHA'I STORY
When I became a member of the Baha'i Faith in the early '70's, I was surprised and elated to hear that my mentor and all-time jazz hero,John Birks Gillespie, had already been a Baha'i for a few years. Dizzy's legacy as a great contributor to society were apparent in the final paragraph of this autobiography, "To Be or Not to Bop":"I would like to be remembered as a humanitarian, because it must be something besides mu sic that has kept me here when all of my colleagues are dead. My main influence must be something else because God has let me stay here this long, and most of my contemporaries are all gone. Most of them are outta here. So maybe my role in music is just a stepping stone to a higher role. The highest role is the role in the service of humanity, and if I can take that, then I'll be happy. When I breathe the last time, it'll be a happy breath." (Dizzy died on January 6, 1993.) Part of one of Dizzy's favorite Baha'i quotes was: "Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch."
